Belief in a living, specific Moshiach is not extreme. It is basic halacha.
Past false messiahs do not cancel a real one. History is not halacha. The Torah gives clear rules. We are meant to use them.
The Rambam writes this plainly. If it sounds new to you, that’s worth asking why.
A Moshiach in Every Generation
The Gemara (Sanhedrin 98b)¹ and the Rambam² both state it plainly: there is a potential Moshiach in every generation. Rav, a Torah sage of the Gemara’s era, said that the Moshiach of his time was his teacher, Rav Yehudah HaNasi. Rav Nachman said that someone like himself would be a fitting candidate in his own generation. These are not chassidim. These are Chazal. This is not a new idea.
Rabbi Akiva called Bar Kochva Moshiach. That’s not fringe — that’s in the Gemara.
Bartenura and Chasam Sofer
Bartenura writes that among the descendants of Yehudah there is always someone fit to be Moshiach. The Chasam Sofer⁴ adds that when the right time comes, Hashem reveals Himself to that person, sends him, and makes the hidden spirit of Moshiach rest on him.
Hashem reveals Himself to Moshiach and sends him. That’s the Chasam Sofer’s words, not a modern invention.
An Ancient Practice
Torah sages of the Gemara’s era searched verses for hints pointing to who Moshiach was in their generation. That practice did not begin with chassidim — it goes back to Chazal themselves. It continued through the generations because the belief itself never stopped.
The sages never stopped looking. Every generation searched. Ours is no different.
The Rebbe
The Lubavitcher Rebbe told his chassidim to believe that the Frierdike Rebbe is the actual Moshiach of their generation — not someone with Moshiach-like traits, the actual Moshiach. He pointed to Torah verses whose first letters spell the Frierdike Rebbe’s names, Yosef and Yitzchak, as proof.³⁵
The Rebbe also stated that the Hisgalus HaMoshiach — the moment the Chasam Sofer describes, when Hashem reveals Himself to Moshiach and sends him — has already taken place.⁶
The Rebbe said it clearly. Look into it.
“According to the announcement of the Rebbe, the Nasi of our generation — the Moshiach of our generation — all matters of avodah have already been completed and finished, and we stand prepared to receive Moshiach Tzidkeinu. The existence of Moshiach has already occurred — and the revelation of Moshiach has already occurred as well. What remains now is only to actually greet Moshiach Tzidkeinu in actuality!”

G-d has already revealed Himself to Moshiach and sent him. Get ready to greet him.
