Sanhedrin 98b calls Moshiach “the metzora (leper) of the house of Rebbi.”
A metzora has been purified from within. Only the outermost layer remains, and G-d surfaces it so he can finish the final fixing.
That is the revelation hidden in the name (see Sefer HaSichos Tazria-Metzora 5751 pgs 496-497).
Moshiach lives in exile, suffering its pain alongside us, longing to redeem us.
He is telling us something: the world is already purified to its core, and only the outermost layer remains.
All we need to do is become vessels for that power. Then he will be revealed.
